Chickens abound in the locality our adventurers visit, and
it's no surprise - after all, this is Chicken Town! (Chicken Town is
the last town the group visits before returning to Guangzhou.) The
episode begins with Shilou and Mei Li being chased by chickens - after
Shilou tried to snatch an egg. They ran into Mao, who was coming out
of a bookstore with a load of books in his arm, and were all trampled by
the marauding chickens.
Unfortunately for the starving group, Mao has spent substantially all
of their money on the 15-volume cooking books. The group hunkered
down in hunger and noticed a sign proclaiming a chicken dish contest to be
held on the next day. Shilou was not as interested at the contest as
Mao, and climbed a fruit tree on a seemingly abandoned house to get some
food.
When he touched the fruit, someone smacked him on the hand with a
bamboo stick, and he lost his grip. As Shilou falls, the stick
catches him by his shirt, and he ends up dangling in the air. After
he demanded to be let go, the stick withdrew, and Shilou bounces to the
ground.
The house turned out not so abandoned after all as a green-haired lady
dressed in black accosted the group. After their stomachs rumbled,
she allowed Shilou to eat the fruit he snatched. (It was
persimmon.) She invited the hungry group to enter the ramshackle
house. On their way in, the group noticed some unpleasant graffiti,
and the sign of the restaurant (Black Wing) lying on the ground.
The woman gave them a meal and chided Mao for
being so optimistic, just like her late brother. He used to run the
restaurant, but now, customers avoided the place. When asked why,
she told them that she didn't like chicken, and offered them a place to
stay for the night. While they lie in the shed, the group noticed a
strange cry. They went out to investigate, and saw a scary red-eyed
completely black........ chicken? Mao tried to touch the chicken,
but the woman shouted at him not to, lest it brings misfortune to
him. "It was the cause for my brother's death," she
said.
It was a month since her brother died. She
had no other family but him. He used to train at a large restaurant
at Guangzhou, and later came to Chicken Town to open a restaurant.
One day, he bought a pair of black chicks, but that was the beginning of
their misfortune, according to the woman, whose name was Tia.
The black chickens died easily and laid only a
few eggs. Every time a chick died, Tia's brother ran around to find
another. He scrounged around to find the best food possible for the
black chicks, and soon racked up a large debt. His friends deserted
him and he soon became ill. On his deathbed, he apologized to Tia
for bringing her lots of hardship. But he was also happy that the
black chickens he painstakingly bred have become stable in quality in
quantity. His dream was finally being fulfilled, and everyone would
finally realize that. Those were his last words.
Since then, the people in town called the black chickens the ominous
chickens, and customers stopped eating there. Tia told them that her
brother's dream was to win the chicken cooking contest with the black
chicken. For that, he was stoned and ridiculed by the people.
Mao has an idea and examined the chicken carefully. He then
volunteers to compete in the contest using the black chicken. He
promised Tia that he would make her brother's wish come true.

The night passes, and it is the day of the contest. The winner of
the prestigious competition will win 1,000,000 Yuan and have the honor
carved on the chicken statue. The judges of the contest are the town
mayor, vice mayor, and the resident chicken expert, Touri. The crowd
speculates on the possible winners this year. When someone notices
the insignia of the Black Wing Restaurant, everyone ran from their
path. The crowd jeered at Mao and Company, ordering them to leave
before they cause further misfortune to anyone else.
Mao asked the judges if they could enter the competition. Having
no handy loophole to prevent their entry, the judges allowed Black Wing to
join, with the intention of kicking them out of town later on. The
crowd was vexed at this turn of events. The cooking starts in
earnest, with Mao doing the usual speed-chopping and cooking.
Finally, it is time for judging.
First on the list is Phoenix Restaurant with their Peking Duck-like
chicken with sweet bean paste. The judging continues with more
chicken dishes displayed by the different restaurants. Last on the
judging list is Black Wing Restaurant. Mao brought to the table a
clay pot and opens the cover slowly. A white glow fills the stage to
reveal... rice. The judges refused to taste it, saying that rice in
a clay pot is not a chicken dish.
Mao insisted that they will know the rice is a chicken dish after they
tasted it. After his show of confidence, the judges agreed to taste
it. The tasting begins, and the judges noticed the unmistakable
flavor of chicken - magnificent sweetness filled with dignity - that heats
up their entire body. It is delicious! The judges were
mesmerized by Mao's cooking.
The judges asked Mao how he was able to place the chicken's flavor in
plain rice. He answered by showing them a black chicken stuffed with
rice. First, he stuffed the chicken with rice, and then cooked it
with spice and liquor. After the rice absorbed the chicken's flavor
completely, he took it out and served it in its best form.

Finally, Mao is asked about the mystery of the ominous chicken.
The chicken expert admits that he has never tasted a better chicken than
this, which gives him a lot of energy. He wants to know what exactly
is this black chicken. Mao replied that it is the famous sacred
bird, Silkie - the famed legendary bird that Touri heard about.
Mao explained that this chicken was made possible by the
hard work of Tia's brother. The judge realized that the people have
abused the Silkie as an ominous chicken. He announced to the
townsfolk that the black chicken is not an unlucky chicken, but one full
of fortune. The judge apologized to Tia for the abuse, and
proclaimed the winner of the contest - Black Wing Restaurant!
Chef Crow (Tia's brother) planned it, and Tia
took over, but the hardest obstacle was hurdled by Mao. If it
weren't for him, the chicken would have ultimately died in obscurity in
Chicken Town. The final mystery (for the judges) is solved when Mao
revealed his crest - that of a Super Chef!
On their way to Chef Crow's grave, Tia thanked
Mao for his help. They noticed someone paying respects by the
grave. It was Chef Crow's best friend in the Guangzhou restaurant he
trained under, and he turns out to be Mao's master - Chef Chouyu!
Chouyu asked Mao what the chef's purpose in cooking was. Mao replied
that it was to make people happy, and ran to his master.
Chouyu thanked Mao for helping his friend realize his dream, and noted
that Mao grew considerably as a Super Chef.
Mei Li is reunited with her father, and Chouyu
decides to take on Shilou as an apprentice. Finally, our group
returns home to Guangzhou!
The Silkie Chicken |

Any of a
breed of crested chickens with webless feathers of a
peculiarly fluffy, silky texture. The silky weighs two
to three pounds and has a purplish face and comb, small
wings, and a short tail. The exact date and place of origin of the Silkies is not known, however Marco Polo wrote of the fur-covered fowl with black skin during his journeys to China in the 13th century.
