Cooking Boy, Mao |

Pai, known
as the fairy of Szechwan, was the head chef at "Kikkaro",
the best national restaurant in Szechwan. Our star chef is the
13-year-old son of Pai, named Liu Mao-hsing. A month after Pai died, her
top disciple Shouan was given an official decree by the chairman of
the Cooking Association, Admiral Lee. Shouan was to be the next head
chef. Unfortunately Shouan carried a grudge and wanted to destroy Kikkaro
Restaurant. Admiral Lee tells Shouan that he must prove himself
before he could have the official seal on the decree. Shouan makes a
wonderful 'Seafood Fried Rice'. After tasting
the dish, Pai's 13-year-old son Mao refuses to believe that Shouan has
surpassed his mother. Mao miraculously re-creates his mother's
famous 'Golden Fried Rice' and Admiral Lee says that the two chefs are
equal. Now Mao is to compete against Shouan for the
position of the new head chef. The loser will be stripped of his
right to cook and bring shame upon himself and others. The subject
is... 'Incredible Mapo
Tofu' with 6 united factors instead of only 5.
Cooking Secret: Each grain of rice perfectly covered with egg.

Dream-Like
Mapo Tofu |

Both Shouan and Mao figured the last
factor was 'texture'. Shouan focused on the tofu, Mao went another
direction. He remembered that when he was 3 years old his mother
cooked Mapo Tofu though there was a terrible beef shortage during
that time. Mao's dish turned out to the be exact same 'Dream-Like
Mapo Tofu' Admiral Lee ate 10 years ago - of course the chef back
then was Pai herself. Mao won his place as the head chef of Kikkaro.
Shouan swore that this would not be the end of his cooking career (by
losing the last competition, Shouan relinquished his qualification
as a cook). Now Mao's finally been accepted as his mother's
successor, or so he thought. From ancient times is has been said
that a talented chef can trace all ingredients back with just their
memory and an image of the taste. Mao reproduced the Mystery Mapo
Tofu with only a memory from 10 years ago. Admiral Lee thought the
best restaurant in Szechwan may not be good enough for him. So Admiral Lee
gave Mao one last condition before he accepted Mao as
the head chef: Go to Guangzhou, the capital of food, to train and
become a certified 'Super Chef' like his mother.
Cooking Secret: Specially prepared soybeans.

Admiral Lee
told Mao to
go to the Yosen Shuka Restaurant and look for Master Luoh. A Yosen Shuka
cook named Sanche showed Mao the way. When Mao arrived, he
was surprised to find that Luoh was not there. In his stead was the
vice-head chef, Master Choyu. Choyu crumpled up and threw away the
recommendation letter from Admiral Lee. He then told Mao to
cook bak choi for the staff's lunch. It turned out to have a slight
odor of mud - so no one ate it and Mao was told to leave. An old man
by the river gave Mao a hint and Mao figured out why the bak choi
tasted different than when he made it in Szechwan. Mao finally
passed the test despite the muddy Guangzhou water. He was assigned to be a 4th grade cook in
charge of vegetables, training under Master Choyu.
Cooking Secret: Special Szechuan oil mixed evenly with peanut
oil.

Final Decision of Yosen Shuka |

Unbeknownst to Mao, the restaurant had
a hard-fast 'rule of exchange'. If one chef comes in another must
leave. Sanche's last chance was in the form of a 'Green
Pepper and Meat' dish. Since all the ingredients were cut to
different widths and lengths, the dish was terrible and Sanche was
replaced by Mao. Everyone in the restaurant was happy to see Sanche
go as he came off as just a lazy employee. In the moonlight, Mao
happened to stumble upon an interesting discovery - Sanche was
engrossed in intense training in the courtyard at midnight. Mao was
convinced that Sanche loved cooking and was not lazy at all. After
getting drenched due to Mao's meddling, Sanche opened up to Mao and Mei Li
about his past. Similar to Mao, Sanche grew up in his father's
kitchen in Shanghai. Sanche's father was training him to cook but
the training regimen was so severe it bordered on abuse. While
ordered to practice cutting the 'Crystal Moon Cut'
Sanche accidentally cut his hand with the knife. Soon after he left
his father's restaurant, swearing he would surpass his father. Ever
since that incident though Sanche has had a fear of hold a knife,
explaining his inability to cut the ingredients correctly. Mao and Mei Li
are moved to restore Sanche's reputation.
Cooking Secret: Ingredients cut EXACTLY the same width/length.

Determined to change Choyu's mind,
Mao, Mei Li, and Sanche come up with a plan. They decide to open a 'Green
Pepper and Meat' stand to impress Choyu with their dish and the
ecstatic customers. While Mao cuts the meat and vegetables, Sanche
puts his skills to use in cooking the dish. After many tasty
attempts, it is just not good enough. Mei Li's frustration with the
two perfectionists causes her to attack a pomegranate tree. Mao gets
an idea. The next day the stand is opened and is a huge success.
Wondering why Yosen Shuka was so quiet, Choyu and a couple others go
to check out the commotion. Of course the 'Red
Green Pepper and Meat' convinces Choyu of Sanche's love of
cooking - but there's still that Yosen Shuka Restaurant 'rule of
exchange'. Master Luoh comes to the rescue saying that the
restaurant's tradition is to be UNtraditional. Sanche is welcomed
back to the staff. Again realizing his love of cooking Sanche
decides to return to the exasperating training of his father in
Shanghai. Sanche leaves his wok and knife behind for his dear friend
Mao in appreciation of his help.
Cooking Secret: Squish fully ripened pomegranate for sweetness.

It's Chinese New Year and the most
exciting Spring Festival is being held for Guangzhou chefs - the Guangzhou Dumpling
Contest. Choyu was planning to enter his 'Emerald
Phoenix Dumplings' but was mysteriously injured. Choyu chooses
Mao to take his place and represent the restaurant. A traveling pair
of chefs gather a crowd that peaks the interest of the Yosen Shuka kitchen. Mao and
Mei Li go to investigate. The Dumpling Brothers
perform a great show and their dumplings are even better. These two
cause quite a bit of trouble before the contest, rivals who
would do anything to win. Karao is the chef whose restaurant closed
due to the competition across the way and Al is ready to do what it
takes to have his brother succeed. Determined to win, Mao chooses to
fight their fried dumplings with his fried dumplings. Still boiling
his soup, can Mao beat their 'Flame Dumplings'?
Cooking Secret: Brain + Brawn = tasty?
