Mao's dumplings are done
but taste awful. Someone sabotaged the base soup. The Dumpling
Brothers clearly lead with the most empty plates. A mysterious old, stinky man
comes to try the Dumpling Brothers' dumplings. After finding they
are especially tasty, the man requested another plate. Repulsed by
the man's appearance Karao rejects him saying that they are not
providing free food. Mao on the other hand was happy to give the man
seconds, thirds, etc. Mao's dumplings look plain but fully capture
the perfect taste with no sauce. What a surprise to find this
mystery man was actually Master Chef Lo Wen. Lo Wen retired from
being the Emperor's chef and disappeared to find ingredients and talented
chefs. His is at grand master level
and has authority above all other chefs. When Master Lo Wen praises
Mao's dumplings, the other people quickly line up for a taste. All
the contestants results are counted. Both the Dumpling Brothers and
Mao have exactly 1242 empty plates - tie! Master Lo when comes up
with the idea for a rematch the following day but this time they
must not use fried dumplings.

everyone has made their choice the large jar is shattered. Out pours
a sea of white balls. Yosen Shuka wins by unanimous vote. Lo Wen
tells Karao that he has superior skills but lacks the dedication to the customers.

Everyone is celebrating Dumpling
victory. Mei Li accidentally drinks alcohol instead of her tea and
gets a little tipsy. Choyu, irritated by everyone's laxness toward
the Super Chef Exam, describes how hard the test is. A girl comes to
visit Mao and Mei Li gets a little jealous but it turned out to be
Mao's sister. Karin came to visit and bring Mao some of their Mom's stuff.
Mei Li helps carry
the things in but notices a stone in the bag. Thinking it was just a
plain rock making her job harder, she takes it out and puts it in the garden.
Mao goes to exam with Mei Li. there are a lot of people. The exam
topic? Incomparable Noodles. Only the first five people will qualify.
A nearby chef, Wong Hu points out the many talented chefs including:
Huang,
"Witch" Che Lin, Tang, and Fei. They all rush
off to get their ingredients. Mao is stumbled by the topic and Fei
gives him a little hint. After entering the arena, Mao is fascinated
by the other chefs. Huang threatens Mao for watching him cook. Fei wraps his noodles in leaves then tells Mao people are very nervous/tense. Fei
says Mao should think about his roots. Finally getting an idea, Mao looks for
the stone from his mother. Finding the stone is not in his bag, Mao
rushes to doors. It turns out that he will get disqualified if he leaves.
Mei Li feels bad
that it was all her fault and goes back to find the stone. Time is almost up.

Mei Li
is still not back. Huang passes first with 'Rejuvinating Noodles' that will make even sick
people strong. After much bullying by others irritated that Mao
hasn't even started, Mei Li finally arrives. It is so close to the
cut off time that many leave out of frustration. Mao breaks the rock apart and boils
it in water. the second person chosen was Tang. He qualified
with his 'Eight Treasure Noodles' that have the
eight morals all heroes must have. Mei Li gets frustrated with Mao about not adding
water but Mao says it is not needed. Che Lin passes third with 'Wild Animal
Noodles' which will appeal to every incomparable hero. Fei is
busy stretching his noodles in a dance-like motion. He stretches the
noodles more than 20 times, normally they cannot be stretched more than 10.
At last Fei's 'Dragon Moustache Noodles"
are ready. Fei used lotus leaves to add a sweeter flavor. Number
four has been chosen. Mao raises hand but could not be seen by the
judges. Instead Wong Hu gets to go first. If he passes, Mao's dish
won't even get a chance. Wong Hu presents his 'Tung Po's Favorite
Meat'. What is the result?

Wong Hu
FAILED! The
judges comment that the dish was too fancy to represent So Tung Po.
Shattered, Wong Hu is thrown out of the arena. Mao finally gets the
opportunity to show his stuff. Surprisingly Mao's noodles do not
have any extras or even soup. By using Lye Water made from his
mother rock, Mao is able to bring out the hight flavor of noodles. Mao passes.
The five people have been chosen. Mao and Mei Li rejoice only to find
out that this was just a preliminary to weed out untalented chefs. Now
the real exam begins. The doors are opened to a huge stadium built
especially for the Super Chef Exam. All the ingredients from each
region are present in the Legendary Cooking Stadium. This arena carries
over 4000 years of cooking history. Everyone is tense. Reika, Pai's lifetime rival, is
judge and is extremely strict. Topic: Noodles, Not Noodles. Each person
goes to his own corner to select ingredients.

Mao again is stumped by
the topic. He watches the other chefs prepare. Tang does a
hand-stand but only balancing on one of his thumbs. Che Lin tests
her explosives. Huang lifts an entire bull onto his shoulder and
prepares it. Mao decides to use catfish. He says that catfish can be
made into anything. Mao panics as he discovers that he has suddenly
lost his sense of taste. Fei finds a needle behind
Mao's ear that numbed his tasting abilities. They do not know who
did it but realize that some would do anything to receive the Super
Chef title. Mao blatantly asks Fei why he is helping him. Fei says Pai
once helped him when young but does not remember much. He has a flashback of being taken away and his parents killed.
Afterwards he was sent through a terrible cooking training camp. We
later see Fei collapsing in the snow in front of Pai's place. Pai
gives him a great soup and Karin gives him a friendly smile. At this
point Fei understands that cooking can be good and bring happiness. Now,
though, they must compete. Mao uses Red Snapper for the soup and meat.
The 'Catfish Noodles' lack elasticity though and Mao needs to come up w/ a solution
quick!
Cooking Secret: Catfish.
